A Family Reunited in Wool: Carina's Custom Pet Portrait of 4 Cats, 1 Dog & 3 Birds

Carina's request arrived as a folder of forty-one photographs taken over nineteen years. Four cats, one dog, three birds — and not a single picture with more than three of them in it.

That is the quiet problem with a multi-pet portrait. The animals never posed together, and several of them never met. The portrait has to invent a moment that never happened while still feeling true to each individual.

Building a group that never gathered

We started with scale. A budgie next to a labrador looks wrong unless the composition gives the bird a reason to be where it is, so the birds were placed on shoulders and on the frame edge rather than on the ground.

Then came coat colour. Two of the cats were tabbies with almost identical markings in photographs, but Carina could describe the difference instantly: one had a broken stripe across the shoulder. That single detail decided how we blended the wool for each.

The part that took longest

Eyes. Eight pairs of them, each needing a different iris colour and a different catchlight angle so the whole group appears lit by the same window.

The finished piece took eleven days of studio time. Carina told us her daughter recognised every animal without being told which was which — which is the only review that really matters to us.
